Mariners to Avoid Frankfort Harbor, Sunday
Annual Ironman Competition to Close Waterfront
The Frankfort harbor will be closed to all mariners on Sunday, September 10, for the annual Ironman Competition, which begins at 6:30 a.m.
Local residents and visitors are reminded that this competition includes a 2.4-mile swim in Lake Michigan, a 112-mile bike race through Benzie County, and a 26.2-mile run through downtown Frankfort and surrounding areas.
The harbor will be closed from sunrise to sunset to ensure the safety of swimmers and boaters.
This popular competition draws hundreds of athletes from all over the world who train diligently to compete in the iconic Ironman.
Depending on weather and water conditions, swimmers will either start at the Frankfort beach or off the end of the north pier.
After the swim, athletes will transition to the bike portion of the race which begins at the Frankfort Beach parking lot, heads north on M-22 through Elberta, and then turns around at the turnaround point in Empire.
The run will begin and end at the Frankfort Beach parking lot.
"The safety of our athletes and the community is our top priority," said Frankfort City Manager Joshua Mills.
"We appreciate the cooperation of mariners and encourage everyone to come out and cheer on the athletes as they compete in this challenging event."
