Round Island Burrowing Boa Extinct Due to Habitat Destruction
Extinction of a Mauritian Endemic
Bolyeria multocarinata, an extinct species of snake, has suffered a tragic fate due to the complete destruction of its habitat. Once endemic to the island of Mauritius, the Round Island burrowing boa has seen its survival chances reduced to zero.
The Round Island burrowing boa was thought to have also occurred on mainland Mauritius, but its presence there is uncertain. The boa's habitat was destroyed with the arrival of Dutch colonies, leading to the species' extinction.
